Most of our welcome visitors and guests are familiar with the many attractions in the Geneva Lakes area: our beaches at Library Park, and Big Foot State Park, specialty shops and galleries, golfing, boating, hiking the Potawatomi Trail, lake cruises, great food, and lodging services.Delavan, one of Wisconsin’s early cities, sits in the middle of what was at one time an inland sea. During the Ice Age, many glaciers, the last of which was known as the Michigan tongue, covered this area. The Michigan tongue descended down what is now known as Lake Michigan. A large section of this glacier broke off, pushing southwest into the area now known as Walworth County. Geologists have called this section of the glacier "the Delavan lobe".
Delavan has a rich nineteenth-century architectural heritage. From Greek Revival to turreted Queen Anne structures located throughout, Delavan is a showcase of Victorian architectural styles.
Lake Geneva became known as the “Newport of the West,” a popular year-round resort for wealthy Chicago residents who built summer homes and estates on the lake and in the wooded hills. Many of those Chicagoans then lived in these homes year-round after their Chicago homes were destroyed in the famous fire of 1871. Until the beginning of World War II, ice was shipped by rail from Lake Geneva to Chicago. Tourism now dominates the local economy, and the city is known for its scenic beauty, luxurious resorts, and historic mansions.
Outdoor activities abound in the summer months in both these towns with so much to share and enjoy. The myriad of activities and events are compelling escapes. Boating, fishing, golf, hiking, water skiing, swimming, biking, horseback riding mixed with festivals, fairs and special events to create a vacation destination that shouldn't be missed.
